Scoring a new head of hair doesn’t have to mean surgery. Dutasteride is a powerful new-generation male hormone DHT-blocking medication which, when administered via mesotherapy, can prevent hair loss and thinning as well as significantly rally regrowth.
” Dutasteride is a newer generation DHT blocker because of its extra potency in comparison with finasteride regarding inhibiting the enzymes that generate the damaging DHT. “
Presenting a highly effective non-surgical treatment option, dutasteride is a medication that can stop as much as 90% of the production of the male sex hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), high levels of which prevent vital nutrients being absorbed by hair follicles, causing them to shrink and, eventually, fall out. As such, dutasteride prevents, slows and can even reverse hair loss in people with male pattern baldness.
It’s a more potent version of our formerly preferred medication, finasteride, because, while both inhibit 5-alpha reductase (the enzyme that converts some testosterone into DHT) thus reducing DHT levels, dutasteride blocks two types of enzymes to finasteride’s one, meaning it packs an even bigger punch.
Using tiny needles, we inject the medication just a few millimetres into the skin of the ‘superficial scalp’ (the top layer) via mesotherapy, where micro-injections of active preparations are dispensed on the scalp to enriching effect. Ultra-targeted, unlike orally consumed tablets, we’re able to hone in on wherever the problem is most prevalent, such as the crown or temples.
Please note that, for your absolute safety, dutasteride is only available following a consultation with a doctor.
While dutasteride is a medication that’s also used to treat prostate cancer, in this context it’s dedicated to remedying hair loss/thinning.
Dutasteride is typically used for men who are experiencing male pattern hair loss, aka androgen alopecia. However, it’s also excellent for optimising hair transplants, such as follicular unit extraction (FUE); because the medication prevents hair thinning or loss, it means the transferred follicles are more likely to successfully bed in/maintain their strength.
The effects can be truly transformative for the long haul, but, because of the genetic nature of the condition, maintenance is essential. Therefore, we recommend a course of four monthly treatments, followed up approximately every three months to twice yearly thereafter to maintain the very best results.
For some patients, we also recommend a supplementary topical solution, the additional use of the hair-regenerating HR3 LED hair cap (more details in the section below), or a low dosage tablet (taken orally) to keep further thinning at bay.
Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.
Dutasteride can also be used as part of our specialist hair treatment programme, TrichoTest®, where – in response to genetic testing – custom-created micro-injections of vitamins or natural anti-androgens are dispensed directly into the scalp to remedy hair loss.
Mesotherapy also works well with other hair treatments, including the overall head health revitaliser Scalp Facial; PRP for Hair aka Platelet Rich Plasma therapy – a chemical-free treatment that harnesses the body’s natural nutrients and regenerative prowess (the blood) to promote personal localised healing; and Exosomes for Hair. Exosomes, which we administer in conjunction with microneedling, are small sacks generated by animal or plant cells (ours are derived from roses), containing growth factors including proteins, peptides, lipids and amino acids to boost collagen levels in order to encourage hair growth.
The effects of this treatment can also be amplified by the hair-regenerating HR3 LED hair cap, a home-use product (suitable for both men and women) that works by administering an even dose of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to the scalp in order to clear DHT.
Dutasteride is best considered only for men or women of post-menopausal age, because the medication (a male sex hormone blocker), when absorbed into the body, could cause birth defects in male foetuses.
Additionally, because of the impact on male sex hormones, there is a small possibility of mood changes, decreased libido and lowered semen volume. This is far less likely for dutasteride than finasteride due to the lower-level dosage required to affect changes (no cases have yet been reported for dutasteride when delivered by mesotherapy), but this should be noted by prospective patients.
As previously mentioned, dutasteride is only available following a consultation with a doctor.
Here are a few final things that you might like to know before taking things forward. If you have any other questions we haven’t thought of yet, no problem! Please email us at hello@thelovelyclinic.co.uk and one of the team will get back to you as quickly as they possibly can.
There is a small level of pain/discomfort and bruising from the injections, but this can easily be mitigated with the use of a ‘distraction vibration anaesthesia device’, or a topical ‘scalp block’ that numbs the scalp for the duration of the treatment.
Expect to wait six months to a year to see the very best results.
Nothing, it’s an entirely safe process.
Dutasteride is a drug that is technically applicable to everyone, excluding women of child-bearing age or men not using barrier contraception (as the correlation with the male sex hormone has the potential to cause birth defects in male foetuses).
