Dr Sarah Tonks says...

“We were early adopters of Thread Lifting because of my personal experience with the first wave of threads. Now, we’re pioneering the superior versions.”

What is thread lifting and how does it work?

Serving up a trusted non-surgical alternative to the mini face-lift, instead of removing loose skin surgically, Thread Lifting involves inserting small threads below the surface, which means they can be worked like tiny sculptural scaffolds to shape sagging skin into a tauter position. The process also spurs the body’s natural collagen resources into action, stimulating the vital process of self-healing that cultivates more pert skin.

As such, it’s an exacting process that provides progressive rejuvenation of the facial tissues, instigating for those who do it at regular intervals, a gradual improvement in tone and firmness.

Pioneers of Thread Lifting procedures, at The Lovely Clinic in Chelsea. We use three lengths of thread to achieve the best results. Small straight or coiled threads are ideal for dealing with lips, eyes, and thin crepe-like skin on the neck and chest; medium versions are suited to larger areas such as cheeks and jowls, while the longer form pieces are used to accentuate facial elevation all over.

Which part of the body is thread lifting designed for?

A dream of a treatment for improving the overall quality of the skin anywhere on the face, neck, and décolletage (see above), Thread Lifting works an especially intense magic in small areas, making it particularly effective on the lips, jowls, jawline, brows & eyes.

The tautening, clarifying effect often can make threads a great replacement for fillers, which in compact zones such as eyes and lips can create a puffier look caused by the ‘migration’ of the filler, or due to the filler attracting excess water. Thread Lifting offers a truly unique breed of precision tightening to defy excessive droop.

Who is it primarily good for?

Thread Lifting is suitable for anyone over 18, including those keen to use the collagen-boosting properties to pre-empt sagging skin, and people keen to redress the more obvious signs of ageing.

It’s also ideal for homing in on small areas; extending and sharpening the line of a lip, adding lift and tone to a cheek, or improving the contours of the eye area.

Because it’s performed under local anaesthesia, it’s suitable for those for whom age-related conditions make them ineligible for surgery.

How long will it last for and what’s the downtime?

Approximately 12-18 months.

Downtime for thread-lifting is typically minimal. Comparable to dermal fillers, recuperation is usually just a few days for the shorter versions, one to two weeks for the larger varieties. Bruising is fairly uncommon; most patients can expect light swelling only, depending on the area of treatment and number of threads used.

Patients often stagger their sessions, graduating from the shorter threads to medium or longer versions in order to assess the process and finesse their look gradually.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments does it work well with?

What else should I know?

TLC is one of the only clinics in London to use the revolutionary, more premium PLACL threads – a mix of polycaprolactone (PCL) and poly-L–lactic acid (PLLA) – which have a greater sculpting capacity, plus higher collagen-boosting factor, than the  PDO versions.

That’s not to say we never use PDO. On the contrary PDO threads are very useful in some cases to help reduce fat as the material itself has a slight fat-reducing property.

Our favoured threads are the Nordyx PLACL threads when treating small areas and the Aptos and Silhouette Soft threads for larger-scale lifting. There is a type of Aptos thread which also contains a large amount of hyaluronic acid making it unparalleled in terms of lift and skin rejuvenation, whereas Silhouette Soft are particularly good at lifting the jaw and repositioning the fat in the mid face.

The Silhouette Soft threads require a longer treatment time and a bit more downtime than with the Aptos threads, and the procedure takes around 1 hour in total, with results lasting up to 18 months. Silhouette Soft works well for patients who have thicker skin, which isn’t too heavy.

FAQS

Here are a few final things that you might like to know before taking things forward. If you have any other questions we haven’t thought of yet, no problem! Please email us at hello@thelovelyclinic.co.uk and one of the team will get back to you as quickly as they possibly can.

Does it hurt?

The short threads (those ideally suited to lips, eyes, the neck, and chest) are similar to the experience of having dermal fillers, while the installation of the longer threads, which are used to accentuate facial elevation all over, would be a little more uncomfortable however we use a local anaesthetic injection to numb the skin as you would have before dental treatment.

When does it start to work?

Expect to wait a few months after completion to see the final effect as the results of the collagen-production stimulation kicks in, but there will be some evidence of change immediately visible.

What can go wrong?

It’s very rare to experience any complications with Thread Lifting, but adverse effects can include a thread poking through, some pain, bruising, swelling, infection, puckering or the feeling of pulling.
