Dr Sarah Tonks says...

“ProFractional™ laser resurfacing is underrated due to being less high profile than some of its light and laser therapy cousins, but it’s exceptionally good for improving scars, fine lines, adding polish, and is an ideal companion when you want to mix up therapies to get the best results; we often ‘go combination’ as we customise our treatments to get different aspects of the dermis to react differently.”

What is ProFractional™ and how does it work?

The ProFractional™ laser is an ablative laser (but not full field, like the Contour TRL™) which deploys thermocoagulation to work its skin resurfacing magic: heat generated by lasers condenses the blood vessels or tissues, reducing redness, shrinking visible veins, and stimulating collagen production to improve skin texture and spur smoother, more evenly toned skin. No other treatment gives the polish possible with ProFractional™. It works by simultaneously sending multiple fine laser beams across the skin, (instead of being rolled across the skin like our Sciton HALO Laser, the beams hover just above it), the surrounding tissue is left largely intact enabling the skin to heal rapidly.

For scars, the treatment can be performed on its own, such as after a breast reduction or caesarian section, but it’s generally done in tandem with other treatments to get the very best results for an individual’s skin type and condition. For red scars it is often paired with the BBL to reduce the redness.

Which body parts is skin resurfacing designed for?

This treatment can be used anywhere on the body and is ideal for any type of scarring including acne, stretch marks, pigmented lesions, or post-surgical skin trauma. It’s also incredible for treating sunspots, freckles, fine lines, and problem pores, giving a glass skin finish.

Who is it primarily good for?

Without the same need for ultra-deep downtime as full-field ablative laser treatments, ProFractional™ Laser skin resurfacing is more universally applicable, with the benefits to scarred skin making it as much of a boon to young acne sufferers as mature patients.

ProFractional™can also be used on the delicate skin of the eyelids where it can be a compelling alternative to surgery particularly for the lower lids.

How long will ProFractional™ results last and what’s the downtime?

Depending on the depth and concentration of the treatment, results can last up to a year. However, we recommend a series of three treatments for general rejuvenation, and between three and 10 sessions for scarring.

Typically, we advise allowing five to seven days of downtime.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments does it work well with?

This ProFractional™ skin resurfacing treatment is ideally used in concert with other treatments to deliver a custom skincare solution. Typically, for ultra-polish we often perform the procedure in tandem with NanoLaserPeel™ or MicroLaserPeel or, for a lighter touch, with ClearSilk®. For concurrent improvement in visible blood vessels or veins, or sunspots or hyperpigmentation we use BBL immediately before the ProFractional™.

For red scarring you might expect it to follow an initial treatment of the BBL® HEROic™ – one of the only varieties of light therapy shown in a study to have the potential to rejuvenate ageing skin cells at a DNA level.

What else should I know?

While ProFractional™ Laser Resurfacing does support remedying pigmentation issues, for those wanting to treat melasma, (brown or grey patches of skin), we’d recommend HALO® –  a smart Hybrid Fractional Laser treatment that’s more in-depth than BBL® HEROic™ (although often used in conjunction) and therefore generally more successful in redressing more obstinate or deep-seated skin discoloration-related conditions.

FAQS

Here are a few final things that you might like to know before taking things forward. If you have any other questions we haven’t thought of yet, no problem! Please email us at [email protected] and one of the team will get back to you as quickly as they possibly can.

Does it hurt?

While, like all laser treatments, some people will experience discomfort, so we recommended a topical anaesthetic beforehand. For treatments incorporating the eyelids we suggest an injection of local anaesthetic.

When does it start to work?

It starts to work immediately (during the procedure it’s possible to see the skin contracting) but the full impact of the remodelling will only be visible in two to three months.

What can go wrong?

There is a risk of infection, hypopigmentation, and hyperpigmentation but every eventuality will be discussed with you in your initial consultation.
