Dr Sarah Tonks says...

“PicoSure Pro ® is the gold standard when it comes to pigmentation and tattoo removal because of the way it shatters the pigmented area rather than heating it, thereby avoiding residual skin damage.”

What is it and how does it work?

PicoSure Pro ® is a laser dedicated to reducing irregular skin pigmentation including melasma (brown or blue-grey patches or freckle-like spots that often surface during pregnancy), sunspots, dark spots and discolouration. It can be great for tattoo removal, improves wrinkles, acne scars and large pores. While most laser treatments deploy a longer burst of photothermal action (heat) to unseat pigmentation, PicoSure Pro ® uses picosecond technology to serve shots of highly concentrated energy so rapidly that it significantly reduces heat build-up – shattering the coloured pigment at speed to leave the surrounding skin with minimal residual damage.

A considerable bonus of the treatment’s PressureWave Technology is that it squeezes the cells – activating the natural cell signalling processes that create new collagen and elastin – improving overall skin tone and texture, spurring a more radiant complexion.

Which body parts is it designed for?

PicoSure Pro ® can be used on any area of the face and body (it’s fast and highly accurate in both its capacity to target the right areas).

Who is it primarily good for?

PicoSure Pro ® is suitable for all skin types, including those with medium and dark complexions looking for pigmentation improvement, such as melasma or sunspots, because the laser is highly targeted. Unlike other laser treatments where the energy can be too overwhelming for dark complexions, PicoSure Pro ® is far less likely to cause changes in the surrounding skin.

How long will it last for and what’s the downtime?

For treatments related to dissipating pigmentation, the effects are long-lasting, but some conditions such as age spots and melasma can return should patients indulge in excessive exposure to the sun. Repeat treatments will help to maintain results.

Please note that all treatment responses and recovery times are dependent on the individual patient.

What other treatments does it work well with?

What else should I know?

The treatment’s results will manifest over time as the skin’s natural regenerative capabilities kick in. Most people see an improvement within three to four weeks following their initial treatment, but some people may require multiple sessions (your TLC doctor or therapist will advise.)

One of the few issues PicoSure Pro ® does not address is skin redness, such as persistent flushing, thread veins or birth marks – for this condition, please see the BBL®HEROic in Sciton JOULE ® Light & Laser Technologies.

A CONSIDERABLE BONUS OF THE TREATMENT’S PRESSUREWAVE TECHNOLOGY is that it activates the natural cell signalling processes that create new collagen and elastin, THEREBY IMPROVING OVERALL SKIN TONE AND TEXTURE, AND SPURRING A MORE RADIANT COMPLEXION.

FAQS

Here are a few final things that you might like to know before taking things forward. If you have any other questions we haven’t thought of yet, no problem! Please email us at hello@thelovelyclinic.co.uk and one of the team will get back to you as quickly as they possibly can.

Does it hurt?

Patients having the PicoSure Pro ® treatment can expect to feel pain similar to being flicked with a rubber band. As a result, we’ll sometimes use a topical anaesthetic to mitigate any discomfort.

When does it start to work?

You’ll see a small improvement after each treatment, with the final effects visible after the full course has been completed.

What can go wrong?

Complications associated with PicoSure Pro ®, while rare, can include scarring, keloids (darker, raised scars) – but only if you are already prone to them – blisters, redness, pain, hypopigmentation, hyperpigmentation and an indentation of tissue.

Will I need to take time off to recover?

Patients may experience redness immediately following the procedure, but makeup can be applied if necessary. There may also be some light flaking as the skin renews itself, typically lasting around three to five days.

Who is a good candidate for PicoSure® Pro ?

PicoSure® Pro is safe for all skin colours, types, and tones. It’s ideal for treating pigmentation (including stubborn melasma), improving overall clarity, reducing acne scarring, softening fine lines, and brightening dull or uneven skin. It’s a versatile choice for patients wanting strong corrective results with minimal downtime.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of PicoSure® Pro sessions needed always varies depending on the specific concern, typically ranging from 2-5 sessions for pigmentation and skin rejuvenation.
