Managing the menopause: hormone treatments for women

Managing the menopause: hormone treatments for women

From mood changes to weight gain, menopause can bring a whole host of challenges for women, and while there’s loads of advice available ranging from supplements to nutrition and hormone treatments, we think it’s all about choosing the option that works best for you.

Read on to get clued up on what menopause means for your health and why choosing bioidentical hormone treatments could be the best thing to get you back to feeling glowing and confident again.

What’s the deal with menopause?

All women will experience menopause at some point in their lives. While symptoms can include hot flushes, insomnia and difficulty concentrating, the truth is it really differs for each individual woman. But why do women experience menopause in the first place?

Women’s hormones are meant to slow down around the age of 51 as their ovaries gradually stop producing the hormones needed for reproduction, and with this slowing down comes the side effects you might be all too familiar with.

We see it as almost reverse puberty; rather than waking up for production, our hormones are slowing down as that period has passed, and even though hormones naturally fluctuate throughout everyone’s lives, the loss of oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone all play a part in why women feel the way they do during the menopause.

What can be done?

We always reassure all of our lovely patients that going through menopause and experiencing a whole range of symptoms is completely normal. That’s why we love to help get them back on track using a solution that works for them.

As with any health concern, there’s a whole host of treatments out there for menopause ranging from the natural to the very unnatural, and here at The Lovely Clinic we’re all about using the most natural ingredients to deliver safe, brilliant results. This is where our female hormone treatments can come in really handy.

Bioidentical hormone treatments

At The Lovely Clinic we offer a solution which uses bioidentical hormones. If you’re not familiar with these, bioidentical hormones mimic the hormones that naturally occur in our bodies.

The idea behind bioidentical hormones is a simple one: help your hormone levels return to normal so that you feel more balanced, just like you did before the menopause hit. An alternative to battling with your hormones while they’re messy and all over the place. For example, by using bioidentical hormones which are made from plant oestrogen, we can then put oestrogen back into your body to help balance things out.

We’ve found that women using our hormone treatments generally feel better in less than 90 days. It’s all about working out the best solution for you – and without using anything synthetic, this means no nasties and no adverse effects to worry about.

The ‘H-word’

If the word ‘hormone’ sounds scary to you, we totally get it. Hormone treatments have had a bad rep in recent years due to the associated risk with breast cancer and this was highlighted in the Women’s Health Initiative study in 2002. This study found that the use of hormone treatments could be linked to cancer, blood clots and heart attacks.

When we had a closer look at this study we found that the hormones they used were synthetic and not intended for use in humans; one of them being horse oestrogen. With bioidentical hormones that are plant-based, we can now mimic our own hormones exactly and avoid problems like these.

The risk of using hormone treatments, in particular bioidentical hormones, is not what you might think as we’re simply putting more of the hormones you’re losing back into your body in exactly the same format.

Are bioidentical hormone treatments right for you?

If you’re considering a hormone treatment to help balance things out, we’ll initially have a consultation with you to understand your specific needs. We can then tailor a hormone treatment programme based on your health history and what you’d like to achieve. There really is no one size fits all and we love taking the time to get to know each of our patients to understand what we can do.
