Pigmentation is incredibly common, whether it appears as a few sunspots, freckles that have become more noticeable over time or larger areas of uneven colour. The encouraging part is that we now have several ways to improve it. The key is understanding what type of pigmentation you have before deciding how to treat it.
Years of UV exposure can leave behind scattered sunspots and uneven tone, while melasma behaves differently and can be influenced by hormones, heat, UV exposure and inflammation. Some people also have brown pigmentation alongside redness and more general signs of sun damage.
This is where the difference between BBL® HEROic™ and PicoSure Pro® becomes useful. Both are available at The Lovely Clinic in Knightsbridge and can improve pigmentation and sun damage, but they approach the problem differently.
Rather than asking which technology is better overall, it is more helpful to ask which one is better suited to your skin and the type of pigmentation you would like to improve.
What Causes Pigmentation and Sun Damage?
Melanin is the pigment responsible for giving our skin its colour. When melanocytes, the cells that produce melanin, become more active, areas of excess pigment can develop.
UV exposure is one of the most common triggers. Over time, it can contribute to freckles, sunspots and uneven tone, particularly across areas that regularly see the sun, such as the face, chest and hands.
Not every brown mark is caused by the same process, though. Melasma commonly appears as larger, irregular patches, often across the cheeks, forehead or upper lip, and can be influenced by UV exposure, hormones, heat and inflammation. Post-inflammatory pigmentation can also appear after the skin has been irritated or inflamed.
At The Lovely Clinic, identifying the type and pattern of pigmentation is therefore the starting point. Once we know what we are looking at, we can choose a treatment that makes sense for that particular skin.
What Is BBL HEROic and How Does It Treat Pigmentation?
BBL HEROic stands for BroadBand Light High Energy Rapid Output. Despite often being discussed alongside lasers, it is actually an advanced broadband light treatment.
When treating pigmentation, carefully selected wavelengths of light are absorbed by melanin within the unwanted pigmented areas. The pigment heats up and, following treatment, brown spots may temporarily look darker before gradually fading as the skin clears the treated pigment.
One of the biggest advantages of BBL HEROic is its ability to treat larger areas efficiently. This makes it particularly useful when sun damage is scattered across the skin rather than limited to one or two isolated marks.
It may be considered for:
- sunspots and age spots
- freckles and uneven pigmentation
- redness and rosacea
- uneven skin tone
- wider signs of photodamage
This is helpful because sun damage rarely presents as just one concern. We often see brown spots alongside background redness and uneven colour. BBL HEROic gives us the opportunity to look at the complexion more broadly, with the aim of creating clearer, more even-looking skin rather than simply treating individual marks.
What Is PicoSure Pro and How Does It Treat Pigmentation?
PicoSure Pro® is a picosecond laser, which means it delivers energy in extremely short pulses.
These rapid pulses break unwanted pigment into much smaller particles, which can then be gradually cleared by the body. Because PicoSure Pro relies less heavily on heat than many traditional laser approaches, there is less unnecessary heat build-up in the surrounding skin.
At TLC, PicoSure Pro may be used for pigmentation concerns including sunspots, dark patches, discolouration and melasma. It can also improve other aspects of the skin, including acne scarring, enlarged pores and overall skin quality.
This makes it particularly interesting when pigmentation itself is the main concern or when we want a highly targeted approach while limiting thermal energy.
For a closer look at the technology, you can also read our guide to PicoSure Pro for melasma and pigmentation.
BBL HEROic vs PicoSure Pro: Which Is Better for Your Pigmentation?
Both can be excellent pigmentation treatments, but they have different strengths. BBL HEROic uses broadband light and controlled thermal energy, while PicoSure Pro uses very short laser pulses to break apart pigment with less reliance on heat.
What matters most is matching those differences to what we see in your skin.
Which Is Better for Sun Damage?
For widespread sun damage, especially when brown spots appear alongside redness and uneven tone, BBL HEROic can be a particularly good option.
Years of UV exposure often leave a mixture of freckles, sunspots, redness and uneven colour rather than one isolated mark. These changes can also extend beyond the face to the neck, décolletage, arms and hands.
BBL HEROic works well when we want to treat this broader picture. PicoSure Pro can also improve sunspots and discolouration, particularly when specific areas of pigment are the main concern.
In simple terms, broader sun damage involving both brown and red tones may lead us towards BBL HEROic, while more targeted pigmentation may make PicoSure Pro a better fit.
Which Is Better for Melasma?
PicoSure Pro can be particularly useful for selected patients with melasma because it targets pigment with less reliance on thermal energy.
Melasma needs a slightly different mindset from ordinary sunspots. It can be influenced by UV exposure, visible light, heat, hormones and inflammation, and it has a tendency to recur. Treatment is therefore usually about managing it carefully and improving the appearance of the pigment without unnecessarily irritating the skin.
PicoSure Pro is not a permanent cure for melasma, but it can form part of a thoughtful treatment plan. We would usually consider how active the pigmentation is, your skin tone, previous treatments and potential triggers before deciding how to proceed.
Our wider Pigmentation Reduction Services also include other approaches that may be considered when appropriate.
Which Is Better for Darker Skin Tones?
PicoSure Pro can be a useful option for melanin-rich skin because it can target unwanted pigment while limiting unnecessary heat in the surrounding tissue.
This matters because darker skin naturally contains more melanin. Treatment therefore needs to be carefully selected and adjusted so that we improve the unwanted pigmentation while respecting the surrounding skin.
This does not mean everyone with a darker skin tone automatically needs PicoSure Pro. The type and depth of pigmentation, natural skin tone and individual response all matter.
We have explored this subject in more detail in our guide to why treatment selection matters in melanin-rich skin.
Recently tanned skin is also different from naturally melanin-rich skin. A tan temporarily increases melanin near the surface, so we may recommend waiting before certain light or laser treatments. This is simply about choosing the safest and most effective time to treat.
How Do You Choose Between BBL HEROic and PicoSure Pro?
The best choice depends on the pigmentation you have, your skin tone and what else you would like to improve.
For widespread sun damage involving brown spots, redness and uneven tone, BBL HEROic may be particularly useful because it can address several aspects of photodamage across a larger area. If more targeted or complex pigmentation is the main concern, or we want to minimise thermal energy, PicoSure Pro may be a better fit.
Sometimes the right first step is simply to give the skin a little time. Recent tanning, for example, may mean postponing treatment, while melasma often benefits from a carefully planned approach rather than immediately reaching for the strongest treatment available.
A good pigmentation assessment helps us make these distinctions and choose an approach that suits both the pigment and the surrounding skin.

Can BBL HEROic and PicoSure Pro Be Combined?
They can be used as part of the same wider treatment plan when there is a clear reason to do so.
For example, someone might have defined areas of pigmentation alongside more general redness and sun damage. Rather than expecting one device to address every concern, treatments can be selected or staged according to what we are trying to improve.
Other technologies available at TLC can also play a role. MOXI™ can be combined with BBL HEROic when overall clarity, brightness and subtle sun damage are priorities. For more established textural changes alongside sun damage, HALO® may also be considered.
This does not mean everyone needs a combination treatment. Quite often, keeping a plan simple and allowing the skin to respond to one well-chosen treatment is the best place to start.
FAQs About BBL HEROic and PicoSure Pro
Can BBL HEROic or PicoSure Pro prevent new sunspots?
Neither treatment can stop the skin from producing pigment in response to future UV exposure. Daily broad-spectrum sun protection is therefore one of the most useful things you can do to help maintain clearer, more even-looking skin after treatment.
Can you treat pigmentation on the hands and chest?
Yes. Sun damage frequently appears beyond the face, particularly across the chest and hands. BBL HEROic can be particularly useful for treating broader areas of photodamage, although we would assess the pigmentation before deciding on the most suitable technology.
Why can pigmentation look darker after treatment?
This can be a normal part of the treatment process. Targeted pigment may initially become more noticeable before gradually fading as the skin clears it. We will explain what you can expect based on the treatment you are having.
Can old sun damage come back after treatment?
Existing areas of pigmentation can improve significantly, but your skin can still develop new pigment in the future. Good sun protection is therefore important for maintaining the result and reducing further UV-related changes.
Should I treat pigmentation in summer or winter?
Pigmentation can be assessed throughout the year, but periods of lower UV exposure can make treatment and aftercare easier. If your skin is recently tanned or you have had significant sun exposure, we may recommend waiting until the skin is ready to treat.
Which Pigmentation Treatment Is Right for Your Skin?
The positive thing about treating pigmentation today is that we have different technologies for different types of discolouration. A few sunspots, widespread photodamage and melasma do not have to be approached in exactly the same way.
At The Lovely Clinic in Knightsbridge, London, we look at the type of pigmentation, your skin tone, recent sun exposure and previous treatment history before deciding whether BBL HEROic, PicoSure Pro or another appropriate approach is likely to suit you best.
If pigmentation or sun damage has become more noticeable, book a consultation to understand what is causing it and the options available for gradually achieving clearer, brighter and more even-looking skin.
